Whether it’s the season of love or giving, chocolates are always in high demand.., At the very least for us, that is. Vegan chocolates make great snacks and ingredients for baking. We go through a couple of bars every week!
But why do we love vegan chocolates so much? Well, they’re delicious, first of all. Second, they actually make healthier snacks than others out there. Third is just their versatility. You can add chocolate in some shape or form to many recipes.
But let’s get to the meat of why we’re here, shall we? We want to find out what’s behind vegan chocolates… Is all chocolate vegan? What is vegan chocolate made of? Is vegan chocolate healthy? All good questions. So, let’s answer them!
Vegan Chocolate: Behind The Wrapper
Can vegans eat chocolate?
Of course, we can! Imagine a world if we couldn't! That said, we vegans only eat vegan chocolates. And, boy, are they as decadent and delicious as ever.
What is vegan chocolate?
Vegan chocolates can be identified by their ingredients. As you can probably guess, they shouldn’t contain milk, honey, or animal byproducts. You’d be surprised at how many non-vegan ingredients sneak their way into a regular bar of chocolate.
If you aren’t convinced just yet, take a look at your ordinary bar of chocolate. They may seem vegan-friendly, but why aren’t they labeled as such? One of the culprits may be refined sugar. Certain types of sugar, like refined sugar, are made with bone char. It’s bone char that helps give refined sugar its usual white color. Shocking, right?
What is vegan chocolate made of?
Now that you’ve gotten the bigger picture, let’s get to the nitty gritty. You really only need cacao to make a bar of chocolate. If you want an example, take a look at Marsatta Chocolate’s Crystal Label Bean-To-Bar Chocolate. It can taste a little bitter, but it’s one of the “purest” bites of chocolate you can ever have. And, we admit, it may be an acquired taste - one that only chocolate connoisseurs crave.
If you prefer a bite of “milk” chocolate, you can easily find a vegan substitute. These are often made with oat milk. You can also get some with soy, coconut, and almond milk - but since oat milk works so well to match the texture without adding overpowering flavor, that’s what you’ll usually find.
Rest assured, finding plant-based alternatives to your previous favorites is easy. For example, if you love that crunch of honeycomb, brands can make some using unique recipes. No bees will ever be harmed or even bothered when you go for vegan companies.
Is vegan chocolate healthy?
Like all other foods out there, it depends. Bars with extra ingredients can make a bar of vegan chocolate as “guilty” as any. Pure chocolate bars like we mentioned earlier can be the healthier choice. Vegan chocolates could contain less fat and have fewer calories than their counterparts.
Vegan chocolate bars do tend to be more allergy-friendly than others as well. If your kids simply must have their chocolate, consider going for vegan brands. Children are more likely to share their food and this, at least, provides some peace of mind.
So, regardless if they are vegan or not, chocolates still require moderate consumption. Don’t overdo it... As delicious as they are… All of us must resist!
