We Need To Care For The Environment

It’s no secret that our planet is under immense pressure. Agriculture plays a big role in climate change, producing around a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. And this is largely due to the meat and dairy industries, which create around 14.5% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Forests and other important ecosystems are continually destroyed to make way for agriculture.

Giving up meat can help us reduce global carbon emissions and promote more sustainable forms of farming. Let’s look at soya for a moment. Soya is an amazing crop that could feed billions yet at present, more than 80% of the world’s soybeans are fed to livestock in order to keep up with the demand for meat. Soybeans are a versatile ingredient and the star of the show in many delicious vegan meals. With so much land and so many crops going towards supporting the meat industry, our planet and those on it are suffering.

A typical Western diet that includes meat products around 7.3kg of CO2 equivalent per day. In comparison, a typical vegan diet produces only around 2.9kg. That’s a huge difference! Going vegan can give you a taste of caring better for our amazing planet. And trust us, it’s a delicious taste. For each person that switches to a vegan diet, carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 1.5 tonnes per year. A vegan diet is one that cares for our environment.

Help Stop Animal Cruelty

Another of the main reasons to go vegan is to show care and respect for the wonderful creatures we live alongside. We all know that a diet laden with animal products means the violent killing of animals. And despite all the amazing vegan alternatives now available, this continues to be the norm. We wholeheartedly believe that this must change. Let’s look at some of the stats.

Every year, 69 billion chickens, 1.5 billion pigs, 0.57 billion sheep, and 0.3 billion cattle are slaughtered. Factory farms force animals to live in terrible, cramped conditions that deny their natural needs and instincts. And not only does the meat industry slaughter billions of animals each year but the dairy industry subjects animals to a life of cruelty and suffering.

In nature, wild hens lay around 12-20 eggs per year whilst chickens used for eggs have been genetically manipulated to produce around 250-300 eggs per year. At hatcheries - where new hens are hatched and sent to egg farms - around 6 billion male chicks are killed each year through suffocation or being ground up alive. Shocking, right?

The good news is: this doesn’t need to be the way. Why go vegan? To put a stop to this cruelty. This is undeniably one of the main benefits of a vegan diet. And we bet once you’ve tried vegan, you won’t go back.

More Reasons To Go Vegan

We’ve outlined some of the key reasons to go vegan, but there are so many more. To summarize a few of these:

1

Almost half of the water used in the United States goes towards raising animals for the meat industry. More water is saved by not eating one pound of meat than it is by not showering for 6 months!

2

Workers in the meat industry are subjected to unsafe working conditions, low pay, and long hours. Workers in many meat facilities are held in what is considered modern-day slavery.

3

Meat farming has led to land invasions in Brazil and the Americas, where Indigenous communities have been forced out - and even killed - for the sake of land grabbing.
